Our program has increased tremendously over last year's participants. This year we will be hosting seventeen children, compared to last year's seven. One sad note, however: orphans will not be allowed to participate in this year's program. We are praying that the rules might be revised for the 2010 summer program. in the meantime, we are excited about the group coming this year - arriving very shortly!.
On Sunday February 8th, an organizational meeting was held at the home of Don and Yasmin Teter, the coordinators for the Wilmington-ABRO group. The size of the group that attended was much larger than last year's meeting, which means that the number of Belarussian children who will get to participate in the Wilmington leg of the program will increase tremendously this year - approximately double in size from last year's group.
The folks who attended the meeting were able to watch a DVD entitled "Chernobyl Heart", a heart-wrenching documentary about the birth defects and health problems that have increased at an astonishing rate in Belarussian children since the Chernobl disaster of 1986.
On Friday January 23rd, an informational meeting was held at Port City Community Church (PC3) to provide interest and answers to folks who were interested in participating in this year's program. Joe and Danita Strong, the directors of ABRO drove down from Raleigh to attend and to offer insight into this tremendous cause. The ABRO movie was shown, followed by a panel discussion consisting of Joe, Christie Coley - missions director for PC3, Don & Yasmin Teter - the coordinators for Wilmington-ABRO, and some of the host families who participated in last year's program. There were many attendees and the night was a huge success for the program.
